'The Handmaid's Tale' has been renewed for a fourth season

"The Handmaid's Tale" will be renewed for a fourth season, Hulu announced on its Twitter account Friday, posting a promo video along with it.

The Emmy-winning show, streamed exclusively through Hulu, is an adaptation of Margaret Atwood's best-selling novel of the same name and set in a not-so-distant, bleak-looking future. Warren Littlefield, an executive producer of the show, and Ann Dowd, who plays Aunt Lydia, appeared on Brian Stelter's "Reliable Sources" in June and argued America is inching closer and closer to the dystopia that is portrayed in Gilead.

In Gilead, the population has declined drastically and the political environment is in a state where religious extremists have taken over the whole country. Most women are barren and the few fertile ones, called Handmaids, are forced to into sexual servitude for different families in the new ruling class.

Elisabeth Moss, who won an Emmy and Golden Globe for her role, stars as June Osborne, the main protagonist in the series. June is one of the handmaids as well as a former wife and mother. She narrates the series as she gets further invested in spearheading the resistance movement.

"The Handmaid's Tale" is currently still in its third season, airing Wednesdays on Hulu. The Season 4 premiere date has not yet been announced.
