Hulu is developing a TV show of Margaret Atwood’s Handmaid’s Tale sequel.
New book The Testaments will take place 15 years after Offred’s final scene in the original novel, which was released in 1985.
Time’s Lucy Feldman reports that Bruce Miller – the showrunner of Emmy-winning series The Handmaid’s Tale – “is involved in discussions about how to best approach the new material".
The Handmaid’s Tale recently ended its third season and will return in 2020 for a fourth. Elisabeth Moss, Joseph Fiennes and Ann Dowd star.
“It’s unclear at this stage what form The Testaments will take – whether it will be folded into the existing Hulu series or developed as a separate work,” Feldman writes.
It’s unknown which Handmaid’s Tale characters, if any, will show up in The Testaments, but it seems likely that Miller should provide some crossover should they proceed with a TV show version.
Speaking about the existing TV show, Atwood said she’s “given them lots of ways of how” the writers can advance the character of Offred.
The audiobook for The Testaments will be narrated by Dowd, who plays Aunt Lydia in the TV show.
The book will be released on 10 September.
