The Gwynedd chippie that has put Welsh meat top of the menu

While fish and chips is the traditional British takeaway meal, a chippie in Gwynedd is boosting meat sales for farmers.

Môr a Mynydd in Penrhyndeudraeth has built up its reputation around its burgers and steaks since starting up a year ago.

It sources meat from a radius of five miles, with its beef from its own Pearson Farm on the foothills of Cnicht and Moelwyn and its lamb from Glastraeth/Saltmarsh on the Dwyryd estuary.

The family-owned business now employs a total of 10 people.

Owner Sam Pearson said: “We wanted to create an outlet for locally produced food including beef and lamb from our own farm and other local farms.

“By directly supporting local livestock producers and local processors such as Cae Iago butchery, we retain value in our community and create jobs as well as supporting other small businesses.

“The support and feedback we have had for the quality of beef and lamb has been incredibly motivating and encouraging.”

Sam added: “We have exciting developments in the pipeline for marketing and retailing local produce with a view to creating a producer group of local farmers and growers who share our values and want to join us to retail produce under our increasingly recogniseable brand – Môr a Mynydd.”
