Stuart Millar, the former head of news at the Guardian, has been recruited by BuzzFeed’s UK division to be its head of news.
He will report to Janine Gibson, the former Guardian deputy editor, who resigned in June and was later appointed as BuzzFeed UK’s editor-in-chief.
Millar joined the Guardian in 1996 as a trainee. In his 19 years with the paper, he had a variety of roles – reporter, Scotland editor, special projects editor and deputy editor of the US office – before running the news operation.
He is the latest of several British national newspaper journalists to be hired by the US-based company, which promised earlier this year to make a substantial investment in London.
Other recruits include former Sunday Times staffers Heidi Blake and Michael Gillard; the Guardian special projects editor, James Ball; former Panorama reporter-producer Jane Bradley; and Tom Warren of the Bureau of Investigative Journalism.
When Gibson’s appointment was announced, she said: “We are going to build up a coherent breaking news operation.”
It followed the company’s commitment to double the size of its 40-strong operation while pledging to expand its news content.
