Over the past few months the big transport debate has been engaging with industry, policymakers, academics and consumers – on everything from the funding and sustainability of our transport systems, to public health and safety.
This project has encompassed a wide range of topics, touching on safety for cyclists, the unsustainable rise in car ownership, railways in the north, and even the best transport tweeters and most common myths around public transport. The Guardian big transport debate and reception will serve as an opportunity to finish this year-long policy conversation.
The debate will be chaired by Gwyn Topham, transport correspondent for the Guardian and Observer, and will feature a keynote speech from Patrick McLoughlin, the secretary of state for transport. This will be followed by a response from the three main political parties, who will also lay out their plans for transport policy ahead of the next general election. The debate will also feature a structured Q&A led by the chair and conclude with questions from the audience.
The evening will conclude with networking and drinks in the Institution of Mechanical Engineers’ Library.
