The 'gruelling after effects' I'm A Celebrity contestants experience when the show ends

The 2021 series of I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here is currently ongoing on ITV, with four campmates eliminated and seven remaining.

The campmates have been undertaking gruelling trials and fun challenges to win food, with Ant and Dec set to crown one of them King or Queen of the Castle in the live final on Sunday night at 9pm.

However, for the three weeks while the show is filming, stars follow an incredibly challenging schedule, leaving them struggling with some 'gruelling after effects' when the show comes to an end.

The show normally takes place in Australia but has been based at Gwrych Castle in North Wales for the second year in a row due to Covid travel restrictions.

When filming I'm A Celebrity down under, the Bushtucker trials take place in the morning and the celebs eat their dinner in the evening. However, in the Welsh camp they only get told who is doing the trial at 10pm, which means trials take place very late at night.

Celebs then cook and eat the food they have won in the trial for dinner in the early hours of the morning and go to bed between 2 and 3am.

But what happens when the cameras stop rolling?

Last year’s contestants followed the same strange schedule as this year and reported some gruelling after effects as they tried to settle back into normal life.

At least three celebrities who appeared on last year’s show, Jordan North, Shane Richie and Vernon Kay, reported suffering from castle 'jet lag' after the late nights threw their sleep patterns completely off.

BBC Radio One presenter Jordan North chatted to former campmate Shane Richie on his radio show last year about how they were adjusting to life after the show.

They revealed they were both struggling with insomnia late into the night, with Jordan saying: "Are you sleeping? I'm not sleeping at all."

Shane then admitted he's also been finding himself staying away into the early hours as he's struggling to adjust to a normal routine.

He said: "The first couple of nights [after I came back], I knew I wouldn't sleep. It feels like the worst jet lag, doesn't it?

"And I'm awake at 4 o'clock and Chrissy and the kids are still asleep and I'm wandering around the house."

Shane told Jordan he found out former campmate Vernon Kay was also having issues, saying: "The other night, I get a text from Vernon at half past four in the morning going 'You still awake son?' And I was! I'd woken up and I was wide awake."

How strict is the diet on the show?

As well as suffering a lack of sleep, many contestants report a dramatic weight loss after being forced to survive on a restrictive diet of just 700 calories a day.

This year’s contestant Naughty Boy revealed that he has lost almost 10kg after spending two weeks and three days in Gwrych Castle.

The music producer, 40, was forced to survive on a diet of just rice and beans at the beginning of the show when he was put in the Clink.

He told Lorraine that he weighed 94kg when he went into the camp and now weighs 84.9kg.

When is the final episode of I'm A Celeb and where to watch it?

The I’m A Celebrity final will air on Sunday, December 12 from 9pm through to 10.40pm on ITV. It will be available to watch live on ITV Hub, too, or can be watched there after it has aired.

Remaining celebrities include Saturdays singer Frankie Bridge, football legend David Ginola, Emmerdale actor Danny Miller, gold medal-winning athlete Matty Lee, BBC Breakfast host Louise Minchin, Corrie star Simon Gregson and actor Adam Woodyatt.

Naughty Boy became the fourth campmate sent packing from I'm A Celebrity on Wednesday after he failed to survive the public vote.

His departure followed radio and TV presenter Snoochie Shy on Tuesday and gold medal-winning parasport athlete Kadeena Cox on Monday.

Former Strictly judge and choreographer Arlene Phillips was the first star eliminated from Gwrych Castle last Sunday night.

TV presenter Richard Madeley was forced to exit the show early after he was taken to hospital as a precaution when he fell ill – and having broken the Covid bubble, was not able to return.
