The growing influence of Jorge Mendes in Arsenal transfers following £72m Nicolas Pepe deal

Former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger believes there is a growing appetite for Portuguese managers due to the influence of Jorge Mendes.

Mendes has established himself as one of the most connected men in football.

The 'super agent' has played a huge role in Wolves' transfers over the last three years, helping them to acquire the likes of Helder Costa, Ivan Cavaleiro, Joao Moutinho and Ruben Neves.

Equally, Mendes played an important role in Nicolas Pepe's big-money move to the Emirates Stadium last summer.

As a result, Wenger believes there is a strong push for Portuguese managers, because of their ability but also the potential connections they offer to a potential employer.

"Today, there is a strong push of Portuguese managers," Wenger told L’Équipe when asked about the lack of French managers in Europe's top four leagues.

"Because they are good, of course, and I do not want to denigrate them, but because they have very strong international connections.

"Look at the influence that Jorge Mendes has in several European clubs.

"The French manager is not very “sellable” and on top of that, they are not surrounded by the best agents. Times have changed, your network is critical.

"In 1996, I did not arrive at Arsenal thanks to an agent, even though there was enormous scepticism around my name."
