The groundbreaking league decision that could boost Leeds United promotion hopes

In news that could well hand Leeds United's promotion hopes a boost, Belgium has become the first major European league to cancel the rest of the season.

The Jupiler Pro League's board of directors has recommended the season should be ended early due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Club Brugge would be crowned champions under the recommendation, which needs to be endorsed at a general assembly meeting on April 15.

That process is understood to be a formality.

Club Brugge were 15 points clear at the top of the Pro League, with one game remaining of the regular season - after which the top six teams were due to compete in a play-off competition to determine the champion.

Gent will go into the Champions League as runners-up, but relegation from the division is still to be decided.

It is a move that will likely have ramifications for the rest of European football.

With the Premier League and EFL set to hold meetings this week over the best course of action to take to resolve the season, another European league declaring their campaign over will increase the pressure to find a resolution.

Should English football opt to follow the same route, it would likely see Leeds promoted back to the Premier League.

With the Whites currently sitting top of the Championship, any decision to end the season now would effectively see them crowned Champions.
