The gritters are out - this is how cold it's going to get according to Met Office

People going out and about for a Friday evening (November 8) are being warned to expect freezing conditions as the first really chilly night of winter 2019 begins.

The temperature looks set to touch freezing overnight in Bristol and could get below zero degrees in the towns and villages surrounding the city, as a clear, almost cloudless night will mean any warmth from the day escaping as darkness falls.

Met Office weekend weather forecast

Temperatures will drop rapidly from around 9C on Friday afternoon to a distinctly chilly 3C by 10pm as a northerly breeze really kicks in.

It will be the first night of the late autumn and winter so far that gritters have been deployed by local authorities - North Somerset Council warned drivers on the roads to take extra care as there could be some ice and freezing patches on the tarmac.

It's also - so the tens of thousands heading to the seaside to watch the annual parade are being advised to wrap up warm as they enjoy the procession of carnival carts.

At least it will be dry and not too windy down on Marine Parade, but the temperature will reach a crisp 1C by the depth of the early hours, and the Met Office forecast said it will feel like minus 1C by 5am.
