The Grinch movie 2018: New Benedict Cumberbatch film release date, trailer and cast

One of the biggest children’s films of the year is released this week, with The Grinch arriving in UK cinemas.

The animated film follows the grumpy and reclusive creature, who sets out to steal Christmas from the people of Whoville.

However, it’s not long before the misanthropic Grinch has his outlook challenged forever after forming an unlikely friendship with Cindy Lou Who — a young girl trying to find Santa to thank him for bringing Christmas cheer to her village.

It’s the most recent big-screen take on Dr. Seuss’s classic tale since Jim Carrey gave a memorable performance in 2000’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

The story is in good hands — the film is helmed by the creators of Despicable Me, The Secret Life of Pets and Sing, with co-directors Yarrow Cheney and Scott Mosier overseeing the project.

The film boasts a strong cast list, including Benedict Cumberbatch in the title role. There’s also music from Tyler, The Creator, who provides a version of the theme You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch.

The Grinch - Trailer 2

The trailer was first unveiled back in March and features some sharp visual gags and a flavour of Cumberbatch’s sardonic delivery.

The clip sees the Grinch outline his plans to steal Christmas from the village of Whoville, plotting with his two loveable animal companions Max and Fred.

The Grinch cast

Title role: Benedict Cumberbatch provides a sardonic voice for the Grinch

Cumberbatch is the star draw of the upcoming film, adopting an embittered American accent for the role.

Elsewhere, Cindy Lou Who, who plays an important role in the Grinch’s transformation, is voiced by The Greatest Showman’s Cameron Seely.

They’re joined by Park and Recreation star Rashida Jones, who provides the voice of Donna Lou Who, Cindy's mother.

Legendary actor Angela Lansbury voices the Mayor of Whoville, who must react after her town is raided by the Grinch.

SNL star Kenan Thompson appears as Whoville resident Bricklebaum, while there’s also a cameo from Pharrell Williams, who provides the narration for the film.

The Grinch release Date

The Grinch is released on November 9 in UK cinemas.
