The grim UEFA report that pinpoints SPFL closed door financial nightmare

A UEFA report found that Scottish football rely on gate receipts more than any other nation in Europe as the impact of the coronavirus crisis begins to strangle club finances.

The Club Licensing Benchmark Report, which was published in January based on findings from the 2018 financial year, found Scottish sides rely on paying punters for nearly half of their aggregate income.

A whopping 43 per cent of Scottish clubs' income is from fans paying to attend games as clubs worry that they may have to do without a massive chunk of their revenue for months to come because of the pandemic.

That percentage is higher than any other country in Europe, out of 55 member associations.

Switzerland is the closest country on 31 per cent, followed by the Netherlands, Republic of Ireland and Sweden.

Celtic, the Scottish club with the highest revenue and the only club from Scotland in the top 20 in Europe, generated 42 million euros over the studied period from gate receipts, at around 1.3 million per match.

The percentage in Scotland is over three times higher than that of England, where gate receipts make up only 13 per cent of aggregate income.

It's expected the figures may shift slightly when the new Sky Sports broadcasting deal kicks in for the new season but the report does account for a prior rise in TV revenue.

It makes for grim reading after First Minister Nicola Sturgeon warned that large events will not return for "some months" in a coronavirus briefing on Thursday.

The report also detailed that Scotland ranks 13th in TV revenue and 11th in sponsorship and commercial revenue.
