The grim reason you should never make your bed as soon as you wake up

Experts have shared the grim reason why you should always wait 30 minutes before making your bed in the morning.

While many can't start their day until their bed is properly made, bumping it down a few spots on the morning routine might be worthwhile. That's because, according to the experts at MattressNextDay, you could be making your bed more welcoming for dust mites.

What's worse, you are the cause of the many of the dust mites that are loitering in your freshly made bedding.

The experts explained: "80 percent of household dust mites are made up of your own dead skin, meaning that you’re always producing more – even as you sleep.

"What's more, dust mites love the warmth of your bed, so in the morning, you should pull back your bed covers for 30 minutes and leave them to air and cool down, before you make your bed.

"This will lessen the chances of dust mites loitering in your bed."

The bedding aces also warn that dust mites could make their way into your mattress regardless of whether or not you have a protector on underneath your sheets.

They say: "It’s, therefore, important to clean your mattress every six months – using the change in the main seasons (summer and winter) as a reminder."

Those looking to clean their mattress can do so with a fairly common household ingredient, according to the MattressNextDay specialists.

"To really deep clean your mattress, which needs to be done at least twice a year, sprinkle baking soda over the mattress and leave this to sit for 2-3 hours," said the experts. "After this time has passed, use a vacuum cleaner to remove the baking soda.

"The baking soda will help to thoroughly deep clean the mattress by removing sweat and odours that sink into the mattress over time."

Baking soda can be picked up for just a couple of pounds at most supermarkets. For example, Sainsbury's own-brand bicarbonate of soda will put you back £1.55.
