The Greatest Showman 2: Hugh Jackman casts doubt on whether he will star in sequel

The Greatest Showman was an instant - and long-running - hit when it opened in cinemas, largely in part to lead Hugh Jackman and a great soundtrack.

The news there would be a sequel was met with jubilation, but now there seems to be a bit of concern over what direction the film will go in.

Jackman, 50, who starred as ringmaster P.T. Barnum, said the sequel is already underway in an interview with BBC Radio 2 on Monday, but he wasn't sure if he'd be in it.

The actor was speaking to Steve Wright about his role in the movie Missing Link when he was asked where The Greatest Showman sequel was at.

He said he "knows" producers are "working on a treatment" for the potential sequel, but added: "The real answer is "could be", I'm not sure. I'm being completely honest with you, there is talk of something going around but no one is really sure.

"But I think someone is working on a treatment for something... I know they are, they're working on a treatment for something."

Jackman confirmed he "would like to be" part of a potential sequel, but he wasn't sure if Barnum would end up being the focus anymore.

"I don't know. I don't know. I would like to be part of it for sure, and I don't know if it would be centred on my character," he said.

"The other thing is, it did take eight years to get it made and that wasn't all eight years of convincing people. It takes a long time to write stuff."

Film director Michael Gracey told the Sun back in February that he and Jackman were planning a follow-up and were paving the way.

He said: "When a movie becomes as big a success as this, it's only natural there is demand for a sequel. So those discussions have started and we are working on one right now."

At the moment it seems like discussions are in the early days and there's no clear idea as to who would return. Zac Efron and Zendaya also starred in the film.

Gracey said the first film took eight years to make after backers withdrew money and it faced doubts about whether it would do well.

In the end the film was released in December 2017 and was a hit, it grossed $434 million at the box office internationally and it's soundtrack dominated the charts.

We'd say that's a success.
