'The greatest manager of all' - Nottingham Forest legend Brian Clough remembered on his birthday

Today, Brian Clough would have been celebrating his 84th birthday.

Nottingham Forest's greatest ever manager took the club from mediocrity to their greatest achievement.

Sitting 13th in the Second Division on the day Clough took charge in January 1975, within five years the Reds would have their hands on not just a league title but back-to-back European Cups.

Sacked by Leeds United after a disastrous 44 days in charge, the man who had previously led Derby to a title, had a job on his hands to silence his critics after joining Forest.

In his second full season at the City Ground, Forest finished third, just two points ahead of rivals Notts County, to achieve promotion to the old First Division. That would only be the start of the story.

Why do Liverpool hate Nottingham Forest? The story of a rivalry between two sides who have not met for 20 years

The following season would see the newly-promoted side stun just about everybody in world football by being top of the First Division at Christmas, having only been beaten three times.

On Boxing Day, Liverpool, then the most feared side in Europe, came to town. Against all the odds Clough's men stayed resolute and with a draw held top of the table. They would not lose a single game for the rest of the season, becoming champions with a goalless draw at Coventry City.

The Reds were now on for a European adventure. While fans were dreaming of a trip to Turin, Forest were drawn against Liverpool and would instead have to face arguably the toughest test the competition had to offer in the first round.

A 2-0 victory at the City Ground followed by a goalless draw at Anfield saw Clough's men through and they would later dispose of AEK Athens, Grasshopper, Cologne and Malmo in the final to win the European Cup.

The following season they would repeat the feat, beating Hamburg 1-0 at the Bernabeu to successfully defend the cup.

During his 18 years in charge, Clough also won four League Cups, two Full Members Cups, the FA Charity Shield, the European Super Cup and the Anglo-Scottish Cup.

Nottingham Forest legend Brian Clough WAS best boss England never had - and new list of 50 greatest ever managers proves it

Following his death in 2004, more than 14,000 people attended his memorial service, and statues were soon erected in his honour in Nottingham's Market Square, at Derby's Pride Park and in his hometown of Middlesbrough.

Clough's former players, clubs, and their fans have today been paying tribute to the Reds' greatest ever manager.
