The pensions debate looks set to run and run, at least until Adair Turner's much awaited due in November. Then there's the government's response to look forward to, writes Susan Smillie.
Then a bill, votes, a passage through parliament and … well, you get the picture. And Labour now appears to be keen on canvassing the views of the great unwashed. Last month we had the David Blunkett roadshow, where said minister gave a public seminar on pensions, inviting the suggestion from a focus group that he should find a way to make saving sexy.
And now the government has invited the public to share its opinions through a new pensions debate website. The intro to the site shares the glad tidings that we are living longer (with a nice coloured chart to demonstrate), before spelling out the problems this fact presents and the possible solutions.
There are no suggestions or opinions posted on the site thus far. But this could well be due to the fact that in order to submit your thoughts, you have to fill out a restrictive and nasty-looking form reminiscent of a tax return or application for benefit. Or it could be that there have been loads of exciting proposals, but the site isn't planning to publish them, in case the debate gets a bit steamy. We'll keep you posted.
