Move over ’75 Hard’, there’s a new wellness craze in town, and it’s capturing TikTok by storm. The ‘Great Lock-In’ is here, and everyone’s getting involved.
If you’re on GymTok, WellnessTok, StudyTok or any remote kind of ‘Tok’ that’s about improving your lifestyle and becoming a better version of yourself, you’ve probably come across this new trend.
And if you have no FKN clue what’s going on, you’re not the only one.
The ‘Great Lock-In’ is a social media challenge that started gaining traction on TikTok back in August. Creators started posting on the platform, sharing their goals for the end of the year and how on September 1st, it was time to ‘lock TF in’.
Basically, the whole premise of the challenge is to lock in from now until the end of the year, rather than waiting for New Year’s resolution season to roll around. It’s also known as ‘The Winter Arc’ in the northern hemisphere, but we’re locking in for the summer silly season, baby.
Instead of getting distracted by your phone, doomscrolling, procrastinating or doing whatever it is you do that prevents you from achieving your goals, the Great Lock-In is all about bringing them to the forefront of your mind all the time, and taking action to make them happen.
When you think about it, The Great Lock-In is kinda just another version of the ’75 Hard’. Or it is if fitness is your goal, at least.
What so many people find appealing about the Great Lock-In is that you can hone in on just about anything, really. While fitness is a priority for a lot of people participating, it doesn’t need to be yours. Want to improve your grades? Become a morning person? Focus on healthy eating habits? Read regularly? Lock in, baby.
The Great Lock-In kicked off on 1 September (conveniently a Monday), and is meant to run until 31 December. However, if your FOMO is getting the best of you and you wanna join, it’s not too late. You don’t need a specific date to start working towards your goals, bestie!
TikToker Kadie Glenn said it’s important to start small if you’re planning on participating.
“Instead of saying you’re gonna go to the gym five times a week when that gym has not seen you since last January, you’re gonna start with two,” she said in a TikTok.
“And once you have proven that you are able to show up for those two days consistently, then you scale.”

It’s also important to remember that you’re probably not gonna be able to transform your entire life in the space of 90ish days. Instead of setting a million different goals that are completely unattainable, stick to one or two that you can realistically accomplish. That way, you won’t be discouraged by the end of year which is looming closer.
If the Great Lock-In is taking over your FYP, it might be a sign to pick a goal, and do exactly that. There’s still ample time to go until the year’s end, so you won’t be rushing like mad to implement some new habits or achieve something on your self-improvement to-do list.
Whether this TikTok trend stays in the zeitgeist until the end of the year or is quickly replaced with another fitness or wellness craze is yet to be seen, but I’ll be doing my best to lock in regardless.
