The Great British Bake Off’s second outing drew an average audience of 8.9 million on Wednesday night, about 400,000 down on the season debut.

A peak audience of 9.6 million tuned into the final minutes to watch early favourite Marie Campbell become the second contestant to leave the hit BBC1 show.

Last night’s episode, which managed a 41.8% share of all TV viewing between 8pm and 9pm, was 400,000 down on the 9.3 million who tuned in to catch the sixth series opener last week.

However, it smashed the viewing figures for the second episode of the last series which drew an average audience of 6.9 million.
