The 'great bit of business' Newcastle United have been urged to complete

Jacob Murphy agreeing a new long-term deal at Newcastle United would be a 'great bit of business' for the club.

That's the view of former England, Leeds and Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson, who believes the 26-year-old is now a 'proven Premier League player'.

Murphy's deal at St James' Park is due to expire next summer, and the winger's form last season has reportedly attracted attention from a host clubs across Europe.

Bayer Leverkusen, FC Porto, Leeds United and Rangers are among the potential suitors for the former Norwich City man.

Murphy had previously struggled to earn a regular starting spot under former manager Rafa Benitez after signing in 2017.

Loan spells at West Brom and Sheffield Wednesday followed, and the winger has since forced his way back into the picture on Tyneside with a series of impressive displays as a wing-back.

Steve Bruce has previously outlined his desire to agree a new deal with Murphy, although no contract extension has yet been confirmed.

Robinson reckons the winger's versatility and the reported lack of transfer funds at Bruce's disposal makes a new contract for Murphy a priority.

The pundit told Football Insider: "That would be a great bit of business if they can get him tied down to a new deal. He did well last season when he came into the side.

“It doesn’t sound like Newcastle have much money to spend this summer so players like that you need to keep.

“He is a proven Premier League player and he’s versatile, which is always a plus.”
