The Government release statement after concerns are raised over winter blackouts

The Government has reassured people that there will be enough electricity and gas supplies over the winter.

There have been concerns that power supplies could be limited during the cold months. However Downing Street has insisted that there would be sufficient electricity and gas to go around.

Concerns were raised in a leaked government "reasonable worst case scenario". It said it was feared the UK could experience blackouts for several days in January if cold weather combined with gas shortages to leave the country short of power.

A No 10 spokeswoman said: "Households, businesses and industry can be confident they will get the electricity and gas that they need over the winter. That’s because we have one of the most reliable and diverse energy systems in the world."

That was partly due to a lack of reliance on Russian gas, access to North Sea reserves and imports from "reliable partners" like Norway. She said people should not panic or feel they should cut down on energy use.

The spokeswoman added: "These decisions, in terms of energy consumption, remain decisions for individuals. But what I’m saying is that households, businesses and industry can be confident that they will have the electricity and gas that they need."
