The government plans to change how often it will review lockdown measures

From this week lockdown rules have been changed with people now able to spend time with friends and loved ones outdoors while social distancing.

This came as Boris Johnson announced the UK was ready to move into step two of its plan on easing the strict measures which were first enforced on March 23.

The changes have seen some children return to school, car showrooms reopen and outdoor markets able to trade.

And from mid-June, more non-essential shops will reopen such as department stores which have been forced to close during the coronavirus pandemic.

Since March, the lockdown measures have been reviewed on a three-weekly basis but under new government plans, this will be upped to every four weeks.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock, in a written ministerial statement, said the maximum review period will change from 21 days to 28 days.

"This will allow decisions to align more closely with the period of time necessary to assess the impact of previous changes on key data feeds, including the R (infection) rate," he said.

"The Government will also keep all the measures under continual review and will account to Parliament on an ongoing basis."

In Monday's daily government press briefing, Mr Hancock also explained how implementing local lockdowns might work in the coming months.

As rates of coronavirus transmission go down, localised outbreaks may be reported in different parts of the country and the government plans to lockdown coronavirus hotspots if there is a spike in the regional rates of infection until they decrease.
