Deaw plays nice.

Every role in a TV drama is important. While the story focuses on the main characters, others add colour to a show. Suriyont Arunwattanakul (Deaw) has made a name for himself playing supporting characters in a number of dramas since he started acting in 2006. In that time, he has shown impressive range, playing both good and bad guys.

His most memorable role to date was probably as a terrorist headmaster in Lost Star and Silver Mountain. The performance won him a Nakaraj Award for best villain. But his current role is very different. In Channel 3’s romantic comedy Rak Gun Pan La Wan (Chaotic Romance), he plays Thanut, a nice, dutiful boyfriend.

S Weekly met up with the friendly 35-year-old at Channel 3 where he told us about his work as an actor and TV host.

What do you enjoy about being a host and actor?

Deaw: When I’m hosting, I can be myself. But when I’m acting, I can be somebody else. Acting also allows me to have new experiences. In Chaotic Romance, the main character, played by Nine Naphat, runs a zoo. So I got to see what life is like behind the scenes at a zoo.

How did you develop your hosting skills?

Deaw: When I was younger, I was often given opportunities to represent my school. I participated in several public speaking competitions. The experience helped me a lot. I learned how to make audiences interested in me.

What do you do to improve as an actor?

Deaw: I always review my performances and listen to comments from fans and friends. I’m thankful for any kind of feedback because it helps me see things I’ve overlooked.

How do you approach playing a bad character?

Deaw: I read the script several times until I feel I understand him and his motivations. If he has no background, I invent one. Every character is different. For example, somebody might be bad because they were hurt as a child.

Does it affect your emotions in real life when you do dramatic scenes?

Deaw: If I’m working on several dramas at the same time, it’s more likely to affect me. I remember once, I was playing a very aggressive character in one show and a warm character in another. It was difficult to shift personalities.

Did you enjoy making Chaotic Romance?

Deaw: It was great fun. I was really happy to be a part of it. My character Thanut is adorable.

What was it like to work with Nine Naphat?

Deaw: He's a very nice person. He’s modest and always has a smile on his face.

Are you happy playing supporting roles?

Deaw: Yes. I think it’s good to be given opportunities. It shows that directors have faith in me. It doesn’t matter what role I play, I always do my best.

You're known as a calm, friendly guy. What are you like when you get mad?

Deaw: I was a hothead when I was young. But my parents warned me to control my temper. Now, when I get mad, I stay quiet and try to understand the actions of others.

You’re a host on The Spy Man Show. Can you tell us a bit about it?

Deaw: We interview successful people. It’s a great show for students because they can learn more about various careers. Our guests tell us how they’ve overcome difficulties. It’s inspiring.
