'Matter of weeks' before we can do things

Philip Nolan said things are moving in the right direction – from an 'exceptionally high peak' (Colin Keegan/Collins)

With the Government set to look at and review the current level five lockdown on April 5, we're getting hints from officials that good news could be on the way.

Professor Philip Nolan has said that if the Irish public continues to abide by the current public health advice, it's only "a matter of weeks before we can begin to do more things because of the progressive protection of vaccination."

During an interview on Morning Ireland, the NPHET member also elaborated on what's required for Ireland to ease some of the current restrictive measures that are currently in place.

''We're pleading with the public to continue their extraordinary work in keeping the disease suppressed. In the grand scheme of things, it is a matter of weeks before we can begin to do more things because of the progressive protection of vaccination."

Lovely St Patrick's Day

While over the years we've seen rain, hail, sleet and snow pour down on St Patrick's Day, this year it looks like we might be in for a reprieve.

Temperatures could even get up to the high teens if we're lucky!

Met Eireann has said that the weather on St Patrick's Day is expected "to remain mild and dry with partly cloudy skies and highest temperatures of 11 to 16 degrees."

Renowned weather expert Alan O'Reilly from Carlow Weather has said that we're set for a "lovely Saint Patrick’s Day" due to a front of high pressure that's still on track to arrive next week.

Nursing homes to have two visits per week

Residents of long-term residential care facilities, including nurses homes, can receive two visits per week from March 22 on compassionate grounds - and where a facility has a high level of vaccinations.

This will be allowed under Levels 3, 4 and 5 restrictions, according to new guidelines announced by the Department of Health yesterday.

There is no requirement in the new guidelines to limit visits to less than one hour.

It will allow elderly people and residents who have only been able to see relatives and friends through a window to finally have a face-to-face, socially-distanced conversation with them.
