My take on possibly the easiest mixed drink ever invented (after the gin tonic, of course), the Spanish tinto de verano, a simpler, less alcoholic version of sangria that is easier to make, and less alcoholic, so it’s perfect that’s perfect for a long afternoon in the garden. I’ve replaced half the lemon-lime soda in the traditional recipe with americano, which is a bit like red vermouth (I love Mauro Vergano’s; (tuttowines.com for stockists), to add a herby, bitter kick. If you prefer it less sweet, dilute the lemonade with soda water. Serves four.
1 bottle light-bodied, fruity red wine (beaujolais or a young garnacha)
180ml lemon-lime soda (Sprite at a push)
180ml americano (or vermouth)
Ice, and lemon and lime slices, to finish
Pour the liquids into a chilled jug, mix, pour into ice-filled glasses and add a slice each of lemon and lime.
