Dan Hooker may have found a way to lure Dustin Poirier into a fight.
After Poirier, a former interim lightweight champion, rejected his callout, Hooker has offered to donate half of his purse to Poirier’s “Good Fight Foundation” if he fights him in a headlining spot in New Zealand.
Hooker (19-8 MMA, 9-4 UFC) is coming off a dominant win over former lightweight title challenger Al Iaquinta this past weekend at UFC 243. He proceeded to callout Poirier, who brushed him off and suggested he fight Donald Cerrone instead.
Poirier (25-6 MMA, 17-5 UFC), who suffered a fourth-round submission loss to lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov in September, has been campaigning for a rematch against Conor McGregor, but Hooker mocked Poirier’s callout of McGregor, telling him to not bother waiting and take a real fight by fighting him.
It appears he’s willing to make a generous donation to make it happen.
“The Diamond” has done spectacular work with his foundation, far surpassing his goal of raising $25,000 to help build a water well for an orphanage in Uganda. Nurmagomedov contributed with a generous donation by auctioning off Poirier’s shirt that they traded after the fight, which raised $100,000. UFC president Dana White matched that total.
