The golfing approach that helps John Cooney in high-pressure moments

Ireland rugby star John Cooney has revealed he sometimes thinks about Tiger Woods during high-pressure moments of a game.

The scrum-half has become Ulster 's main goal-kicker, a responsibility he wasn't always so comfortable with.

As a former soccer player, Cooney admits it took him some time to translate his kicking skills to an oval ball.

And then he had to adapt to the pressure associated with converting crucial kicks which can determine the outcome of games.

Cooney admits he has had to change his own mentality as a kicker, and delved into the psychology of golfers to improve his technique.

The correlation between a golfer landing a vital putt and a rugby player landing a kick between the posts was something he could identify with.

"As a kicker, the mental approach is important," said Cooney, speaking in his role as an ambassador for the Tackle Your Feelings campaign.

"I was pretty new to kicking about three years ago, and I had to completely flip the mentality of it all.

"I had the mentality of 'I am not a kicker and nobody is expecting me to get them', to then everyone thinking I am going to score.

"So I had to adapt and I went back and read up on sports psychology.

"I looked at golf, and the connection between golf and goal kicking. The similar processes involved and similar pressures.

"I read up on them and what golfers go through, and I found it really helped me."

And Cooney - who also lists basketball legend Kobe Bryant as a major influence - admits there is one golfing star who he often thinks about in the heat of rugby battle.

"There have been games where I have found myself thinking about Tiger Woods, or other golfers when I am about to take a kick," he said.

"Little things I have read about. I have learned a lot from these other sportspeople and I try to use that knowledge whenever I can."
