The Gogglebox stars who quit the show, reasons why and where they are now

Gogglebox has become a staple of British TV, loved by almost everyone who watches it.

It began in 2013 meaning many of the cast have come and gone, leaving gaping holes in viewers' hearts.

Only a few of the original comical television watchers remain - with just last week Tom Malone Jr announcing his departure.

He announced one day before the new season aired that he had quit the show - and he isn't the only one to have swiftly departed the much-loved programme.

Though to many it initially seemed a strange concept, the award-winning show has been a firm favourite among TV-lovers since its debut eight years ago.

As Hull Live reported, here are some of the cast who have left the show since those early episodes - and the reasons that have been given for their departures.

Sandi and Sandra

Sandra addressed her departure on This Morning, saying: "I am going to miss it, but I decided at that time I wanted to move on to other things. It's four and a half years now, and I'm just moving on, keeping up with the times."

It came after Sandi left the show to explore new opportunities.

Sandi has gone on to feature in Celebrity Big Brother, Famous And Fighting Crime and Celebrity Fat Fighters. Sandra has starred in First Dates and 100 Years Younger In 21 Days.

Scarlett Moffat

Scarlett has gone from strength to strength since leaving the show, winning I'm A Celebrity and getting regular slots on TV shows as a presenter.

She also worked with Saturday Night Takeaway and grew close to childhood heroes Ant and Dec.

While the parents of other former stars remained on the show after they left (more on that below), Scarlett's mum and dad have been absent since her departure.

The Tapper family

The family left the show for a good reason – after son Josh ended up landing a job in politics.

Josh beat thousands of applicants to secure a Civil Service apprenticeship based in the communications department of No 10's Cabinet Office.

Steph and Dom

The pair left the show back in 2016, telling The Sun : "We think it's important that everyone gets their chance to be on Gogglebox and give their opinion, and having been on it from the beginning we felt like we'd pretty much said all we needed to say, and we knew what we were going to say."

We still miss them!

George Gilbey

Essex lad George left his parents Linda and Pete for Celebrity Big Brother - and never returned to the show.

In recent years, George was handed a community order after attacking his ex-girlfriend.

He was also jailed for three months on drink driving charges.

Chris Butland-Steed

Stephen Webb's former on-screen partner left the show in 2016.

Chris Butland-Steed said: "I'd like to announce I've decided to leave Gogglebox and am looking forward to the exciting adventures that lay ahead.

"Huge thanks to @C4Gogglebox @Channel4 for the amazing experiences I’ve had and wish cast and crew well. Massive thanks to the fans for their support! #watchthisspace."

Tom Malone Jr

Tom told his social media followers: "So after six years it's finally time to put down the remote and say goodbye to Gogglebox.

"I've loved every minute and I'm eternally grateful to Channel 4 and Studio Lambert for allowing me to be a part of the show."

As for his reasoning, he simply said: "But new opportunities are knocking on the door and it's time to explore them.

"I look forward to enjoying the show as a viewer and not having to worry about having said something stupid!"

The Michael family

Dad Andrew stood for UKIP in the general election, before the family returned after he was unsuccessful

A spokesperson for Gogglebox at the time addressed the departure.

They said: "It's with great regret that the Michaels are no longer in the show. Sadly any Gogglebox cast member who becomes a candidate for a political party will have to step down from their involvement in Gogglebox.

They added: "They have been excellent contributors and we are very grateful for all they have given to the show."

Gogglebox airs on Channel 4 on Friday, 9pm.
