The Goddess Test by Aimee Carter - review

Aimée Carter, The Goddess Test (The Goddess Chronicles)

The Goddess Test is a relatively short book just missing the 300-page mark, but it is a book I did enjoy and read in a single sitting. Good thing it was the holidays and I wasn't meant to be in college or I might not have gotten around to reading it. This modernized mythology story was an interesting twist, which created the intriguing story about Kate.

Kate's mother is ill, dying, and with that dying wish Kate leaves their home to bring her back to her childhood home. This means Kate is now starting anew herself, a new school with a new house but no friends or family and knowing once her mother passes away she will be alone.

However, as they arrive it becomes clear that everything is not as it seems, especially when she meets Henry and realises that he could be the key to keeping her mother alive. Henry is Lord of the Underworld, for Kate to keep her mother alive she must pass the seven tests, and if she succeeds then she will become Henry's future bride and a goddess. This modern twist on Greek mythology, was an interesting concept which was proven through the novel.

This book sounded so good from the blurb I wanted to read and buy it, so I was definitely happy when it came through the post ready for me to read, with my favourite Book Depository bookmark coming with it too! It was an easy read, which didn't need much help or in depth knowledge to understand the book and what was happening but rather you were able to stroll through the story at an easy pace.

I felt perhaps The characters of Kate and Henry, although they both equally great characters, lacked a certain depth, which I would have liked. However, this could be connected to the writing of the story. Aimee Carter is a really good author, although I feel the writing was perhaps a bit too basic and lacked detail. One half of the page was in one place and the second half in another, meaning at times there was a need for more depth and interest brought to the book since it lacked something special.

I did like The Goddess Test, but I didn't love it which was a problem for me I think, meaning that I wasn't able to get everything I wanted out of it. Sadly, I don't think I will be continuing with the series since I think it would be better as a standalone novel if it had some more depth to it. Despite this I would still rate it as being 3 stars since the storyline was interesting and creative.
