'The goalkeeper loses his head' - MOTD verdict on Newcastle's dramatic Everton comeback

Match of the Day pundit Martin Keown has slammed the performance of Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford following Newcastle's dramatic comeback at Goodison Park on Tuesday.

With the Toffees leading 2-0 in stoppage time, Pickford conceded twice in the space of a couple of minutes as a Florian Lejeune brace sealed the most unlikely of comebacks.

It earned the Magpies a vital point as they maintained the seven point gap between themselves and the Premier League's relegation zone.

For Everton, it was two crucial points dropped and Keown was critical of the former Sunderland goalkeeper's role in Newcastle's goals.

And he has urged the 'frantic' Pickford to 'calm down' in his penalty area ahead of keeping net for England in this summer's European Championships.

“It is frantic. It is incredible and pinball. But the goalkeeper loses his head and his bearings," the former Arsenal and England defender said.

"Looking ahead to the future and the summer, he has got to calm down in that goal. He is frantic and behind his goal line. He’s like a volleyball player there.

"He’s got to calm down and think about his job. I had David Seaman behind me and that is the sort of goalkeeper I’d like to see Pickford become.

"Let the centre-halves do the talking and he focuses on goalkeeping.”
