The Girl with all the Gifts by M. R. Carey - review

M. R. Carey, The Girl With All The Gifts

I could not put this book down. It just captured my imagination and thrilling turns at every page make it a brilliant read.

Set in the near future, a fungal infection has turned the majority of the human race into zombie-like creatures called Hungries, who feed on human flesh. There are a few children who are infected by the fungus but can function and think for themselves. After one of the last remaining army bases, protecting the few humans left, is attacked by an army of hungries, there are only 4 humans and one child hungry who escape.

Throughout the whole book you watch the development of relationships between the 5 main characters. An exceptional hungry, a teacher, a mad doctor, a sergeant and a fearful soldier don't seem like the most likely group of allies. But you see how their characters change as they go through life changing events in every chapter.

Carey manages to mix one of the scariest things that could happen to our world with laughter and wit to make an enjoyable read. It is different to all the books I have previously read and I can't wait to read more of Carey's work.
