The Girl Before: Twitter users share mixed views of BBC's new thriller filmed in Bristol

Many have been waiting for the release of the highly anticipated new BBC One thriller, The Girl Before, which was shot in Bristol.

But, it turns out, the new thriller is just a little too painfully 'middle class' for some viewers, mainly because the house, which features prominently in the four-part series, is set in affluent Redland.

Twitter users have taken to the social media platform in their droves this evening to criticise the work of the show's creators and Bristol Film Office, who worked to shoot the series in April and May 2021, and focused on many prominent locations in the city, including Queen Square and St Nicholas Market.

The psychological series follows Jane (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), who moves into a stunning, yet minimalist, house designed by an architect (David Oyelowo).

But whilst the incredible house may give many inspiration for Scandinavian design, Jane makes a gruesome discovery about past resident, Emma (Jessica Plummer).

As the narrative of these two women unravels, Jane's anxiety overwhelms her as she fears she'll end up like the girl before.

A gripping premise for a series to fill that endless vacuum of time that is the run-up to Christmas, it's unfortunately not been enough to hook the public - because they can't get over how painfully 'middle class' the Bristol-shot series is.

Users took to Twitter to moan about BBC One's latest offering.

@daddofriel joked: "Robert Peston, wearing red corduroy trousers and driving a Volvo to his local farmers' market to buy avocado & olives wouldn't be as painfully middle class as The Girl Before."

Erica James, @TheEricaJames, tweeted: "This drab concrete house would be my worst nightmare."

And Rob Driscoll, @robdriscoll1, quipped: "This isn't middle class enough for me..."

However some viewers have been more impressed with what they saw.

Cherie Coco said: "The girl before on bbc is lit."

And jojoo.•* added: "usually i hate watching anything i’ve loved as a book but but the bbc seem to have done a decent job on the girl before."
