The gesture from Newcastle United's new owners to 'build bridges' that fans will love

Former Newcastle United striker Micky Quinn says he received a message from the new Magpies' owners to reconnect with former players.

The 59-year-old claims the relationship between former players and the club was "difficult under the last regime" but hopes the new owners stick to their word.

Quinn spent three seasons at St James' Park after signing for the Magpies from Portsmouth in 1989 and quickly became a fan favourite during his tenure on Tyneside.

Reconnecting with former players is an easy quick win for the new owners who are trying to rebuild a relationship with a fanbase that was left fractured by the former owner.

Taking to Twitter, Quinn said: "Received a nice message from @NUFC on Friday saying that they are going to build bridges again between the old players and the club, as it was difficult under the last regime, let’s hope they do because I know the fans love seeing former legends in and around there club and city."

There's been a new found wave of optimism and pride in Newcastle United since the Saudi-led takeover, with the new owners ticking off a list of small wins to restore pride at St James' Park.

Moving Alan Shearer's statue on to club grounds and renaming Nine Bar back to Shearer's Bar are a number of ideas that have been mooted, but the obvious disconnect with former players is one that needs to be addressed.
