I don’t know how Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis do it, but the trio’s electric vehicles are consistent and good.
Even the ones that aren’t on dedicated electric car platforms, as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 or Ioniq 9 are, don’t feel like they’re really lacking in any major way. Take the Kona Electric, which at its core is basically a gas-powered Kona with batteries under the floor. It’s fantastic for what it is. This converted-ICE trend isn’t just limited to budget offerings like the Kona; Genesis had two offerings directly based on gas models—the GV70 Electrified SUV, and the G80 Electrified Sedan.
Recently, an eagle-eyed Twitter user noticed something while browsing the brand’s website. The G80 Electrified had disappeared from Genesis’s lineup, with no announcement. Had Genesis quietly canceled the G80 Electrified?
Well, after reaching out to Genesis, the answer is yes. The G80 Electrified is gone for the 2025 model year.
“The customer is at the core of every decision we make, and we remain flexible as we adapt to ever-changing consumer needs and market conditions,” said Jarred Pellat, senior PR manager of Genesis North America. If you’re in search of a fully electric Genesis, the brand will be happy to sell you the GV60 or GV70 Electrified.
That’s kind of a shame, but not totally unexpected. The G80 Electrified’s 365 horsepower and 282-mile range from its 87.2-kWh battery were surprisingly competitive for being a converted gas-powered sedan. The sedan was quick, quiet, and pleasant, as the silent electric motors and smooth power delivery added a lot of refinement to the already-good gas-powered G80 sedan.
Also, in a sea of overstuffed SUVs, the G80’s sedan form factor and nearly-identical styling to its gas-powered sibling were refreshing.
However, people aren’t really buying big electric sedans. It’s hard to pin down exact numbers of the G80 sedan, but if Genesis only sold 4,155 of the gas-powered model, then I can’t imagine the G80 Electrified’s sales were ever high.
And, now the G80’s value proposition is further called into question since President Donald Trump has threatened to institute 15% tariffs on South Korea, which would directly affect the Korean-made G80 Electrified. Add in the softer-than-expected numbers for EVs, and it's definitely disappoinitng we're losing an EV option from a brand that once said it would be a full electric brand within ten years.
It’s not clear if the facelifted 2026 G80 Electrified will make its way here, either. For the next model year Genesis has moved the electrified model to a longer body with an even nicer interior. Pellat says that Genesis has no further information to share about the G80 Electrified. So, it’s not quite a no if the new model will make its way stateside.
Most car-buying websites still do show that some Genesis dealerships do have brand-new 2025 G80 Electrified models in stock, though. If you’re in the market for one, whatever’s on dealer lots right now is likely all the selection you’ll ever find for the G80 Electrified.
