David Luiz's defensive frailties were exposed once again on Wednesday evening in Arsenal's Premier League clash with Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.
The Brazilian - who is out of contract at the Emirates Stadium on June 30 unless the club trigger a one-year extension - was a surprise absentee from the starting line-up when the team news was announced.
Gunners head coach Mikel Arteta opted to pair Shkodran Mustafi alongside Pablo Mari in central defence.
Speaking ahead of the match, Arteta's response hinted that a more in-depth explanation would follow after the final whistle.
However, plans were altered inside the opening 20 minutes as the on-loan Spaniard limped off with a suspected hamstring injury and Luiz was introduced to proceedings.
"There are a few things that have happened in recent weeks. I have to pick the team that in my opinion is the best to compete today and that's what I have done," he told Sky Sports
And on the stroke of half-time the former Chelsea defender was at fault for the opening goal of the game as he failed to cut out Kevin De Bruyne's ball into Raheem Sterling and the England international thumped an effort past Bernd Leno.
Things then got even worse just after the restart.
Caught out by Ederson's brilliant long pass, Luiz had no other option but to bring down Riyad Mahrez in the area and thus conceded a penalty from which Kevin De Bruyne made it 2-0.
To add even more insult Luiz was then given his marching orders for a professional foul.
As a result, he will miss Saturday afternoon's game against Brighton and Hove Albion as well as the clash against Southampton at St Mary's, leaving the Gunners facing a defensive crisis as Mari and Sokratis are both injured.
If the Greek defender doesn't recover in time then Rob Holding could come in for his first Premier League start of the season at the Amex Stadium.
The reason Luiz will serve a two game ban is because it's the second time he's been shown a straight red card this season - the first coming against his former club at Stamford Bridge in January.
Had Luiz been sent off for two yellow cards he would have served a one-match ban.
A red card for violent conduct can be punished with a suspension for three games which is the fate Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang suffered when he was given his marching orders for a lunge on Max Meyer against Crystal Palace.
