Sebastien Pocognoli is set to be named as the next manager of Scotland

The SFA hierarchy have worked their way through a shortlist of names to replace Steve Clarke

And Pocognoli, who led Belgian side USG to their historic first league title in 90 years, is in line to become the second overseas coach of the national team after discussions.

Named as a contender for the Hearts post before Wouter Vrancken’s appointment in the summer, the 39-year-old Belgian led Monaco to seventh place in Ligue 1, securing a place in the Europa Conference League play-offs.

A former left-back, Pocognoli has experience of English football after playing for both West Bromwich Albion and Brighton on loan. A former coach of the Belgium under-21 and youth sides his appointment would be a bold departure from the SFA after Clarke’s departure following seven years in the role.

Scotland return to action in the Nations League with a four game block of fixtures beginning with Slovenia on September 26.

After a search led by chief executive Ian Maxwell and Mulholland, Pocognoli is now in the driving seat.
