The Freshers are here! Road blocks in Newcastle as students arrive in the city ready to party

There is no way if you've been in Newcastle this week that you'll have been able to avoid the fact it's Freshers Week.

Whether it be crowds walking up and down Northumberland Street, shopping in Eldon Square or lining up waiting to get into bars and clubs, new starters at both Newcastle and Northumbria Universities have taken over the city as they start their uni life in style.

As you'll know if you've ever been a Fresher , the priority for week one at uni is getting LOADS of partying in and that's exactly what newcomers to our two unis have been doing this week.

And just over the road and up on Grey St there was a total road block as students queued up to get into the Oops night at Grey's Club with crowds of Freshers in the middle of the road and cars and buses struggling to get up and down the street, as you can see in the video above taken by John Boyle.  

John told Chronicle Live "I worked in promo for a few years myself and it’s never been as busy before.

There were very similar scenes at the end of Collingwood Street and up onto the Groat Market on Wednesday night as Dirtiz welcomed Freshers and returning students for its first night of the new academic year.

Last year there were queues outside a number of shops and at different pop-up stalls as students clamoured to get their hands on freebies and huge discounts.
