The Frank Lampard comments about the Champions League that will excite Chelsea fans

Chelsea fans will be relishing the club's return to the Champions League this season.

The Blues are back in Europe's top club competition after a year's absence, having won the Europa League final against Arsenal in Baku, sealing their place in the group stage of the competition.

The draw for the group stage will take place later this month, with 12 sides set to battle it out in the play-off round to join the 26 teams already assured of their place already.

But the Chelsea fans are not the only ones who will be looking forward to the return of the Champions League nights at Stamford Bridge, with head coach Frank Lampard speaking of just how special they are.

“One of the first Champions League games I remember, it would have been around 2000 with Claudio Ranieri against Lazio, and I remember we won 2-1," he said, speaking on BT Sport programme Sport in Focus.

"The actual shivers hearing the music when we lined up before the game, and I remember thinking this is the thing, the pinnacle, with an evening game at Stamford Bridge.

“After that we had some ups and downs, we tried to get to a final and just missed out and then to culminate in Munich, as we did being the underdogs in their own stadium and it was the stuff of movies.

“When I look back at my career, I cannot help but have that moment as the one that jumps out at me. If I had finished without that on my CV, I would certainly have felt incomplete.

“The moment Didier Drogba’s penalty hit the back of the net. I didn’t enjoy the game, I didn’t enjoy it at all. It was painful trying to hold on in there and get it to penalties.

“The moment he scored the header was also good. I cleared the way with a diversion, I felt and heard the thump of the ball on his head. I turned and saw it go in the back of the net, but that’s why Didier Drogba is a hero of this club.

"For this club to win the Champions League, and be the first London club to do so, is something that we are all proud of and gives me determination to take on the Champions League again as a manager."

Chelsea's first game in the competition this season will take place in September.
