The four best foodie campsites in Wales named among the top 25 in the UK

Four of the best foodie campsites in Wales have been crowned among the top 25 in the UK. Fforest in Cilgerran, Pembrokeshire, Cowpots Camping in Cyffig, Carmarthenshire, Bert’s Kitchen Garden in Trefor, Gwynedd and Tregroes in Fishguard, Pembrokeshire have been praised for their fantastic venues and amazing meals in The Times.

They have been listed as some of the best alongside campsites all over the UK, including in areas such as the Scottish Highlands, Cumbria, Gloucestershire and Dorset. Each campsite was listed in different categories, such as places with the most luxurious foodie sites, with the best gastropubs or with kitchen gardens and cafés.

In the '5 with food trucks and pizza ovens' category, Fforest campsite in the Pembrokeshire village of Cilgerran was praised for its barbecue suppers served every night. In the review for the campsite, it said: "Bell tents, shacks and geodesic domes (several with Japanese-style bath houses) are scattered throughout the woods and fields of this ever popular 200-acre farm by the River Teifi.

"There’s a lot of space between them but there’s a sociable vibe, fuelled by the on-site pub, Y Bwthyn, and barbecue suppers every night during school summer holidays at the Lodge. When the meat’s not sizzling at the farm, pizza nights beckon at Fforest’s gorgeous riverside Pizzatipi in Cardigan. It’s a couple of miles north — a pretty 40-minute walk (taxis can be arranged)."

Meanwhile, Carmarthenshire's Cowpots Camping in Cyffig was also listed in the same category and praised for its homemade ice cream and wood-fired pizzas. The reviewer wrote: "Chances are there’ll be no complaints from your kids about the 10-minute walk to dinner at Cowpots Camping.

"That’s because wood-fired pizzas and homemade ice cream await in the Cowshed at the other end (Wednesday to Saturday). Parents may be pleased to learn that it’s licensed too. There are 18 pitches spread across three meadows. Each has a hot shower and a composting loo."

In north Wales, Bert’s Kitchen Garden in the village of Trefor, located on the north coast of the Llŷn Peninsula and not too far from Caernarfon, was recognised for its homegrown vegetables on the family farm in the '5 with kitchen gardens and cafés' category. "Most of what we serve, we grow,” says Ali Paice of Bert’s Kitchen Garden, which is at the heart of Bryn Ifan, a 500-acre family farm with tent and campervan pitches and luxurious huts (with beds and log fires) to stay in.

The review states: "The restaurant is open for dinner four nights a week. Right now the beetroot is ready for eating: roasted, and served with whipped goat’s cheese and hazelnut butter. There are courgettes and strawberries too. The tent pitches are surrounded by wild meadows, and the campervan pitches are set in woodland. From here it’s a few minutes’ walk to Trefor’s sea stacks."

According to The Times review, Tregroes Pantry was tipped as the best place to find curry and prawn linguine on the menu (Tregroes / The Times)

In the same category, Tregroes campsite in Fishguard, Pembrokeshire was tipped as the best place to find a campsite café serving curry and prawn linguine. The review says: "This summer there are four roomy geodesic domes in Tregroes’ patchwork of camping fields, a mile from Fishguard Bay.

"The domes are kitted out with proper cabin kitchens, each with a microwave, fridge and gas stove. Even so, you won’t be cooking much, thanks to the on-site Tregroes Pantry, which opens five days a week. Madras chicken with chunky chips, prawn linguine, and seabass with roasted new potatoes are on the menu."
