The former Swansea nightclub in a semi-detached house finally has its future decided

A semi-detached house that was once a beloved Swansea nightclub and gig venue will be converted into flats.

Bids to secure planning to convert Mozarts, in Walter Road, Uplands, into 11 apartments were refused in 2019 and again at the end of 2020.

However, after a fresh pre-application enquiry was submitted with two fewer flats on the ground floor, permission has now been granted for the development to go ahead by Swansea Council.

The original plans were turned down as planners felt the proposals for 11 apartments in the normal-looking end-semi would "represent an over-intensive form of development which will not provide acceptable living conditions for the future occupiers of the properties".

A later appeal was also rejected by a Welsh Government -appointed planning inspector in September 2020.

The principal concerns were whether the scheme would provide acceptable living conditions for future occupiers, and its effect on pedestrian and road safety.

Revised planning permission for a mix of nine one and two-bed apartments on the site has now been given the green light. The plans include an increase in roof level of 2.3 metres to "facilitate an additional storey" as well as the widening of the existing vehicular and pedestrian access.

Situated in the Ffynon and Uplands Conservation Area, Mozarts was known for being a quirky late-night spot for a drink on the way home from the city centre as well as before it closed in 2018. It also hosted its own club nights and was a staple of the live music scene in Swansea - with both touring bands and local acts performing there.

And it appears that, had planning permission not been granted, it might have been used for its original purpose again.

The design statement submitted by Raum Ltd, agent for developers Intergalactic Property Holdings Ltd, said: "It is worth highlighting that the applicant has been approached by a number of interested parties who have asked to take-on a long-term lease in order to secure and continue the nightclub function that currently exists.

"This remains a realistic fall-back position".

The planning application can be viewed on Swansea Council's planning portal using reference: 2020/1939/FUL.
