The former Swansea City, Leeds United and Birmingham City guru tasked with taking Garry Monk's Sheffield Wednesday to the next level

Garry Monk has added Ryan Needs to his backroom staff at Sheffield Wednesday.

Needs - who graduated from the University of Wales in Cardiff - worked under Monk at Swansea City, Leeds United, Middlesbrough and most recently Birmingham City before making the move to Hillsborough.

He has been appointed as the Owls' new head of tactical analysis and will be tasked with helping Monk on a day-to-day basis in South Yorkshire.

Needs was in the stands for Sheffield Wednesday's 2-1 defeat to Blackburn last time out but is set to be with Monk this weekend in the dugout for the Championship clash against the manager's former employers Swansea.

And Monk has said his relationship with Needs will be a huge boost for the Owls.

"It’s a department that needed strengthening and Ryan has been with me from the very start. Five or six years we have worked together, and we have brought him in to strengthen that area," Monk told The Star.

"Richard Stirrup (first-team analyst) has been doing a lot of the work himself so I am delighted to bring Ryan in to help the department. He is a big asset.

"He had been with me from the very start, knows how I work, and that is obviously an advantage.

"I am pleased the club have allowed me to do that."

It has been rumoured that James Beattie would also join Monk's coaching staff at Hillsborough.

Reports have suggested the ex-England international has scouted opponents for the club in recent weeks, although that has not been confirmed by an official source.

Swansea take on the Owls at Hillsborough at 3pm on Saturday.
