The former Sunderland star Kevin Phillips compares to David Beckham

Sunderland legend Kevin Phillips believes Nicky Summerbee's crossing ability was on a par with England and Manchester United legend David Beckham.

Phillips enjoyed a fruitful spell in front of goal at Sunderland and is the club's post war record goalscorer.

In 1999/00 Phillips won the Premier League's Golden Boot, the European Golden Shoe and was selected for England's EURO 2000 squad.

And 'Super Kev' believes his prolific run wouldn't have been possible if not for the service he received from Niall Quinn, Micky Gray, Allan Johnston and Nicky Summerbee.

It was Summerbee, though, who Phillips reserved the most praise for.

"Of course Niall stands out but the biggest one for me and Niall was the wide boys and the full-backs, more so Micky Gray overlapping," Phillips told Davy Jones' Lockeroom.

"Allan Johnston would cut inside but the biggest player for me was Nicky Summerbee.

"Nicky, for me, was one of the best crossers I've seen. I had been in the England squad with arguably the world's greatest ever crosser of a ball in David Beckham.

"I always compare Nicky to David in terms of their quality of balls. If you made a run he would find you.

"He wasn't blessed with pace but the quality he had to take a full-back on and whip a ball in behind the centre-half. If I made a run, Nicky would find me.

"The relationship I built with the wide-boys and Micky Gray that season was essential."
