The former police station where you can spend a night in the cells with more than 20 mates

If you’ve never woken up in a police cell but have always been curious as to what it’s actually like, now you have the opportunity without getting into any trouble at all! There’s a former police station in the heart of a Welsh town where you - and up to 27 of your mates and loved ones - can relax, sit back and enjoy a nice break close to the coast.

Located on Priory Street in the centre of Cardigan, Y Clinc is listed on Airbnb as an accommodation spot with seven bedrooms, 12 beds and five bathrooms. It’s for guests aged 16 and over, and can sleep up to 28 people. You can get the latest WalesOnline newsletters e-mailed to you directly for free by signing up here.

Those bedrooms are actually made up of former jail cells, a custody suite and an interview room. There’s a also a family room and a kitchen which boasts two ovens, two gas jobs, an electric hob and two fridge freezers. The building has been restored since it was in use as the town police station, and is managed by local letting firm Ty Annie Holidays.

The idea to bring the station back into good use was formed by Cardigan 4CG, a co-operative organisation set up to “advance community development through the regeneration of Cardigan and the surrounding area”, something the group has been doing for more than a decade.

Given its prime location in south Ceredigion and near to Pembrokeshire, Y Clinc could be the perfect spot for a weekend by the sea, given its close proximity to several wonderful beaches including those at Poppit Sands and Mwnt. It’s listed on Airbnb at £342 a night if you wanted it for the three-night minimum stay this weekend (June 9, 10 and 11) - a bargain if there’s a large group of you staying there.

“You wake up in a police cell, heart pounding, when it hits you - a sigh of relief! You haven’t done anything wrong at all, quite the opposite, you’ve booked to stay in one of Wales’ most unique hostels, which happens to be a former police station!” reads the listing on Ty Annie Holidays. “So, you’ve been sentenced to an unforgettable holiday in Cardigan, West Wales! What next? A day of adventure and outdoor pursuit, surely!

“Y Clinc is a specially equipped and tastefully converted hostel for up to 28 guests on the stunning coastline of Cardigan Bay which guarantees a very special experience for guests. Guests can sleep in the 19th century cells, the judge’s chamber and the custody suite while the impressive courtroom now serves as a spacious dining room and sitting area. It’s a magnificent building that’s steeped in history and is situated in a prime location in Cardigan town centre.”
