The former Newcastle United striker who outstrips Premier League stars in European Golden Shoe charts

The end of the season is rapidly approaching and there is plenty of honours up for grabs, including a number of individual awards.

Among them is the European Golden Shoe, awarded to the leading scorer in the continent, which has been dominated by Barcelona’s Lionel Messi and Juventus’ Cristiano Ronaldo in recent years.

Due to the varying levels of competitiveness across the continent, each goal is awarded a different number of ‘points’ - with goals in the Premier League worth 2 points along with the rest of Europe’s top-five leagues, while the likes of the Turkish league earn less.

While the Premier League is seeing a fierce fight for the Golden Boot, with Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero leading the way with 19 goals but being closely chased by Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah with 18, while Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane and Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang have 17.

However, the stars from English clubs are well adrift of their rivals on the continent and Aguero can only secure tenth spot in the league - with his compatriot Messi leading the way with a haul of 33 goals, worth an incredible 66 points.

His closest competitor is Paris Saint-Germain’s Kylian Mbappe, who boasts 27 goals this season, with the top five rounded off by Sampdoria’s Fabio Quagliarella, AC Milan’s Krzysztof Piatek and Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski.

And while Luuk de Jong's loan spell at Newcastle United may have been quickly forgotten, the Dutch forward is 13th in this season's rankings.

The PSV man has bagged 23 goals this season, putting him ahead of the likes of Harry Kane, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Sadio Mane.
