The former Manchester United striker desperate to make an 'impact' against Newcastle

Watford's summer signing Ashley Fletcher is yet to appear in the Premier League this season but hopes he will be given a chance to make an 'impact' against Newcastle United.

The former Manchester United, Middlesbrough, and Sunderland striker scored in the Hornets' midweek Carabao Cup third-round defeat to Stoke City.

It was Fletcher's second goal in as many matches in the competition, but he is yet to make his top-flight bow under Xisco Munoz.

The Watford boss made wholesale changes for the cup defeat on Tuesday night and will be hoping to secure a second straight league victory against Steve Bruce's side at the weekend.

Fletcher arrived at Vicarage Road on a free transfer following the end of his deal with Middlesbrough, and the striker knows he needs to 'impress' to earn his chance in the Premier League.

The 25-year-old believes he did not perform well in midweek despite his goal, but is determined to take his opportunity if he is given a cameo appearance against the Magpies.

He told the Watford Observer: "I haven't had any minutes yet in the Premier League.

"All you can do is, when you get the opportunity to play, try and impress. I don't think I played particularly well tonight but getting on the scoresheet can always help so hopefully I can keep pushing. Obviously we're out the competition so it's disappointing in that respect, but it was good to get another goal.

"Obviously the games now are just Premier League until January, but all I can do is, in training, keep trying to impress, keep scoring goals and if I get 10 minutes at the weekend against Newcastle, try and make an impact."
