The former Manchester United star who Jurgen Klopp adores - and loves watching Liverpool play

Robin van Persie has played for some of the biggest-name managers in European football.

The former Netherlands international turned out under the likes of Arsene Wenger, Sir Alex Ferguson, Louis van Gaal, Guus Hiddink and Dick Advocaat during an 18-year playing career before hanging up his boots earlier this month.

Having enjoyed a goal-laden career with Feyenoord, Arsenal, Manchester United, Fenerbache and the Netherlands, the forward firmly established himself as one of Europe's deadliest finishers over the past decade.

But the 35-year-old has revealed that the biggest compliment he ever received as a footballer actually came from an opponent, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, rather than any of his own former bosses.

"Jurgen Klopp has given me the nicest of compliments, saying ‘I’ve never seen a player playing in three positions at the same time," the ex-striker reminisced with Voetbal International when recalling facing the German's Borussia Dortmund side in the Champions League for Arsenal in 2011.

"I fell back in the game, went on the wings, was in front. The team adapted to my playing style, they’ve played for me so that’s the only reason I scored the goal and delivered an outstanding performance."

Having played for both Arsenal and Manchester United, you'd expect Van Persie would find it painful watching both side's fiercest rivals fight it out in the Champions League final when Liverpool take on Tottenham Hotspur.

But the Dutchman has also revealed he how much he enjoys watching Klopp's side play ahead of next Saturday's showpiece in Madrid.

"They play with four at the back and before that two blocks of three and those two blocks constantly cover each other at the back," he said.

"It’s nice to see how that works together, there must be heaps of work, there is no other way.

"They have to trust each other, those players. If one goes, the others must be at his back, and another at his back.

"For Klopp, it must also be cool to see that his philosophy is really in that team."
