The former Man United star Spurs' Japhet Tanganga has been compared to after Liverpool display

Former Chelsea midfielder Tony Cascarino believes Tottenham’s Japhet Tanganga has all the attributes that Paul McGrath had.

The 20-year-old made his first Premier League start against Liverpool on Saturday evening at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Although his side were beaten 1-0 by Jurgen Klopp’s men, Tanganga was one of his side's standout performers up against Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.

And Cascarino believes his performance was similar to the ones McGrath used to produce for Manchester United and Aston Villa.

Tottenham 0-1 Liverpool: Jose Mourinho post match press conference

“Paul McGrath he reminded me of. The way he played,” Cascarino told the Weekend Sports Breakfast on talkSPORT.

“He runs with pace and you can tell he sees things quickly, he gets there. He made a couple of last-ditch challenges.

“He was hungry to get in front of the ball and yes it was his debut and adrenaline takes you a long way but he was one of the bright lights.”

Cascarino also believes more work needs to be done by Jose Mourinho on improving his backline.

“This is a team that, two years ago, was very good defensively and now they’re not,” he added.

“That is the big challenge for Jose, how he rebuilds that backline.

“They have got goals. They don’t have to think about goals. They have got loads of goals in that side.”
