The former Leeds United manager who played key role in Pontus Jansson exit

Leeds United were dealt a blow to their hopes of earning promotion to the Premier League yesterday when Pontus Jansson's departure was confirmed.

Brentford acquired the defender from the Whites for an 'undisclosed fee' said to be around £5.5m.

The switch is a dent to Leeds' chances of competing at the top end of the Championship again next season, with the Swedish star having started 37 times in the league last term, while he provided a big presence around the club.

It has been claimed that Financial Fair Play issues at Leeds led to Jansson leaving Elland Road, while there have also been reports of a bust-up between the 28-year-old and manager Marcelo Bielsa.

Brentford, however, did their thorough homework on the centre-back and even reached out to former Leeds and Brentford boss Uwe Rosler to gain a greater understanding of Jansson's character.

Speaking to Sydsvenskan, Rosler revealed: "They called and asked how he was. I could only say positive things. I really like him. He always gives everything in training and has been a good example for our players this summer."

Rosler, meanwhile, added that was 'surprised' by Leeds' willingness to sell up for such a 'reasonable' price.

“I’m glad Brentford gets such a good player. But I have to say I’m a little surprised. It is a transfer that is a mark for the future. I can say that Brentford gets a very good player for a very reasonable price. £5.5m is almost nothing at all in the English market at the moment.”
