The former Arsenal trio in contention to replace Rafa Benitez as next Newcastle United manager

There could be a former Arsenal man in the Premier League dugout come August.

The big news of today is that of Rafa Benitez leaving his position as Newcastle United manager when his contract at St James' Park expires on June 30.

A statement via the club's official website reads.

"It is with disappointment that we announce manager Rafael Benítez will leave Newcastle United upon the expiry of his contract on 30th June 2019.

"We have worked hard to extend Rafa’s contract over a significant period of time, however it has not been - and will not be - possible to reach an agreement with Rafa and his representatives.

"Rafa’s coaching staff, Paco de Míguel Moreno, Antonio Gómez Pérez and Mikel Antia, will also leave the club on 30th June.

"We would like to thank Rafa and his coaching team for their efforts over the last three years and their significant contribution to what has been collectively achieved.

"We would also like to thank our supporters, players and staff for their patience during a period of uncertainty.

"The process to appoint a successor will now begin."

With that said, the odds for Benitez's replacement have been revealed and it's certainly of interest to Gunners supporters.

Three with ties to the north London outfit are in the running, with the favourite of the trio being Mikel Arteta who came close to getting the top job at the Emirates prior to Unai Emery last summer.

The current assistant coach to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City has odds of 15/2 with Betfair, although the BBC have reported there's been no contact with the Spaniard yet.

Gunners legend and another ex-captain in Patrick Vieira is further down the list at 16/1, while Arsene Wenger is at 20/1 to make a shocking return to the Premier League.

With Arsenal kicking off the 2019/2020 away at Newcastle, a club favourite in the opposite dugout would certainly add a little spice to the game.

Next Permanent Newcastle Manager (via Betfair)

Garry Monk - 11/2

Eddie Howe - 7/1

Mikel Arteta - 15/2

Gennaro Gattuso - 10/1

Jose Mourinho - 12/1

Chris Hughton - 14/1

David Moyes - 20/1

Steven Gerrard - 20/1

Marcelo Bielsa - 20/1

Arsene Wenger - 20/1

Quique Sanchez Flores - 22/1

Nigel Pearson - 25/1
