The former Arsenal player who was key to Yohan Cabaye's Saint Etienne transfer

Former Crystal Palace midfielder Yohan Cabaye has joined French club Saint Etienne. The Frenchman has signed a one-year deal with the Ligue 1 club.

The 33-year-old was available on a free transfer after leaving Dubai based Al-Nasr is January, and has been searching for a new club since.

Cabaye was at Crystal Palace between the years of 2015 and 2018, he made 109 appearances for the club, scoring 10 goals and assisting a further six before leaving to join Al Nasr last summer.

The midfielder made 12 appearances in the UAE Gulf League last season before leaving the club on a free.

Saint Etienne have now made their move, and Cabaye will again be playing his football in Europe this season, and the player has credited a former teammate at Lille and an ex Arsenal man in playing a key part in his choice of club.

"It is a great joy and a great pride to sign at AS Saint-Étienne. To find all my feelings as soon as possible. In the image of the club, I have the ambition to achieve a very good season. With Mathieu Debuchy, I found a friend here. His presence has counted in my choice. " Cabaye told the club's website.

Both Cabaye and Debuchy were part of the 'Golden generation' at Lille, where the club won both the French Championship and Cup in the 2010/11 season.

While Cabaye soon moved onto Newcastle, Debuchy followed him to St James' Park 18 months later, the full-back joined Arsenal in the summer of 2014. Despite being at the club for four years, he only went onto make 30 appearances in the red and white before joining Saint Etienne for nothing last summer.

The pair are now again reunited at Saint Etienne, where along with Arsenal loanee William Saliba they will be hoping to bring success to the Ligue 1 club.
