The second teaser for the frantically anticipated new Star Wars film has landed and, as expected, fanboys have been thrown into a frenzy of screengrabbing speculation.
But what has the new trailer, which doesn’t even run to two minutes, thrown up exactly? Spoilers ahead. Well, maybe...
Darth Vader isn’t dead!
During the trailer, we hear a speech from Luke:
The Force is strong in my family. My father has it. I have it. My sister has it. You have that power, too.
The dialogue is actually lifted from Return of the Jedi when Luke explains the truth about his father to Leia, but the final line has been added. Some fans are getting a bit too focused on the use of tense. Why would Luke say his father has it rather than his father had it? Darth Vader is dead, right? The shot of his burnt-to-a-crisp helmet certainly suggests so. But there’s still no confirmation on who the lead baddie is. Who is in charge of the Empire? Is Darth making a comeback?
It’s also likely that the dialogue has just been directly lifted from Return of the Jedi which would explain the tense. Someone has even compared the sound from both speeches. Because internet.
Luke is the bad guy!
As mentioned, we still don’t know who the chief villain is. It’s been a long time between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens and some fans think that Luke might have turned to the dark side. The plot of the new film is said to be focused around tracking Luke down – and leading the pack will be Rey, played by Daisy Ridley, who is rumoured to be Han and Leia’s daughter. Yet, after a leaked image of a cyborg villain, some believe this might be Luke who, in something like an epic “I am your father” ending will reveal himself to Rey once she has tracked him down.
Boba Fett is back!
This brief shot of a fancy new Chrometrooper has understandably caused a heck-load of excitement but also a rather strange idea that there’s a rather familiar character underneath. Many assume it’s Captain Phasma, a new name added to the official character list, and that underneath the armour it’s Gwendoline Christie, who will play the Imperial officer ordered to track down John Boyega’s character Finn. But one nutty theory has matched up the cape, gun and swagger to Boba Fett, suggesting that the fan favourite will be in the forthcoming sequel.
Yes, again, he’s supposed to be dead but the Expanded Universe books claim that he made it out alive from the stomach of the Sarlaac. With another rumour hinting that Han Solo dies in Episode 7, it could mean that Fett could finally get his revenge or...
Luke kills Han!
The rumour that Han will die at the end of the first film has been pretty widespread but the exact way in which he will perish is still the focus of wild speculation. One theory has Luke himself being the killer, but only to save a loved one. Han dying would give him the tragic mentor role of the new trilogy, previously filled by Obi-wan in A New Hope and Qui-Gon in Phantom Menace. If he is poignantly killed by Luke to save someone else, then it would mean that Luke perhaps isn’t the villain. Another rumour suggests that he will die at the hands of his alleged son, bad guy Kylo Ren, potentially played by Adam Driver.
Lupita Nyong’o is the new Yoda!
The exact role being played by the Oscar-winning star of 12 Years A Slave is yet to be confirmed although rumours suggest that she will be playing a motion-capture alien called Rose. This screenshot from the trailer, which shows a lightsaber being handed over, looks to include a non-human hand, allegedly from a character played by Nyong’o. One of the sets at Pinewood is being referred to as Rose’s room and there’s also a suggestion that a major flashback sequence will take place at Rose’s pub. Sources suggest that Rose is a Jedi and she will tell an important story to Han, Finn and Rey that will explain why she is in possession of the lightsaber, before handing it over.
