The footage that helped nail killer Karine Atay as she tried to dupe police

This is the footage of Karine Atay in the minutes after she stabbed her husband to death which helped

Police officers who attended the scene where Atakan Atay had been knifed in the heart were wearing body-worn cameras which recorded what was happening.

ChronicleLive requested this footage at the end of but Northumbria Police and social services tried to stop us from having it on the grounds it may upset children who were in the house at the time.

However, we applied to a judge to order it should be released in line with the open justice principle and he agreed, meaning we can finally show show you the selected clips we requested.

Officers were keen to get an account from Atay as paramedics fought in vain to save Atakan's life on the living room floor.

But she initially tried to deflect attention away from herself, saying Atakan had enemies and business partners he had fallen out with and that she had heard him arguing on the phone.

After Atakan had died, she is told she is going to be arrested on suspicion of murder and replies: "Oh really, he's not okay."

Sitting on her bed in handcuffs, talking to a police officer, she goes on to say: "Look, an argument that got out of hand."

When asked if that's what happened, she replies: "I'm not going to tell you. I'm not a f****** killer, that's it, and I've got to live with that now."

The footage proved to be a crucial piece of evidence in discounting Atay's primary defence, that she was acting in self-defence.

Jurors asked to see the full footage - some of which we cannot show - again during their deliberations.

Atay, 42, was cleared of murdering Atakan, 45, at their home in Birtley, Gateshead, and convicted of manslaughter on the grounds of lack of intent.

Jurors heard she stabbed him in the heart with a kitchen knife up to the hilt.

Prosecutors said the attack happened as he was trying to prevent her from leaving the house to buy more wine while Atay claimed he attacked her, as she alleged he had before.

Atay is due to be sentenced for manslaughter on Friday.
